Neuromuscular Therapeutic Massage

Neuromuscular Massage is often confused with Deep Tissue Massage. While similar, Neuromuscular massage provides more of a medical benefit. Neuromuscular massage therapy is a specialized form of manual massage in which digital pressure and friction are used to release areas of strain in a muscle. Strain areas are called tender or trigger points, and they tend to be the cause of ongoing muscular pain symptoms. These trigger points are small areas of the muscle in which there is a contracture of tissue, and the lack of blood and nutrients in that area causes an inability for that muscle to relax. Neuromuscular massage therapy involves applying alternating levels of concentrated pressure to the trigger point – usually using the fingers, knuckles or elbow. This massage treats symptoms like back pain, carpal tunnel, sciatica, calf cramps, plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, knee pain, jaw pain, tempomandibular joint pain (TMJ disorders), hip pain, earaches, Iliotibial band friction syndrome.

Trigger Point Therapeutic Massage

You know those weird knots or cricks that just show up out of nowhere in your neck or shoulders or back? There’s a name for them – trigger points. A trigger point is a tight area within your muscle tissue that causes pain in other parts of your body as well. They might show up as sharp, intense spasms, or as a dull generalized ache. Either way, they’re a real pain. Coastal Med Spa's Massage Therapy team has ONE main goal: to help you HEAL! Trigger points, a type of muscle stiffness, are the result of tiny contraction knots that develop in muscle and tissue when an area of the body is injured or overworked. Trigger points are something traditional doctors ignore, but they could be the one thing that has been overlooked in your case for years, if not decades. A hallmark of trigger points is something called "referred" pain. This means that trigger points typically send their pain to some other place in the body, which is why conventional treatments for pain so often fail. Many health care practitioners wrongly assume that the problem is located where the pain is and therefore fail to assess the body correctly to find the cause of your pain.
Trigger points can occur as a result of muscle trauma (from car accidents, falls, sports, and work-related injuries, etc.), muscle strain from repetitive movements at work or play, postural strain from standing or sitting improperly for long periods at the computer, emotional stress, anxiety, allergies, nutritional deficiencies, inflammation, and toxins in the environment. A single event can initiate a trigger point, and you can suffer the effects for the rest of your life if that trigger point is not addressed properly.

-Muscular and myofascial release
-Immediate sensation of pain-relief
-Forced relaxation of the trigger point
-Consistent and faithful appointments can result in long-term pain reduction
-Treatments are quick, requiring a small time commitment
-Possible to target a number of different trigger points at once
-Option to use “dry needling” if allergies are present

Prenatal/Pregnancy Massage

Our Coastal Med Spa massage team are highly trained and knowledgeable in the area of prenatal massage. Knowing where a pregnant woman's sore and swollen spots are, create the opportunity to provide some relief, while also knowing which techniques and areas are to be avoided. Prenatal massage is a type that's similar to regular massage – it aims to relax tense muscles, ease sore spots, improve circulation and mobility, and just make you feel good. But prenatal massage is also customized to the needs of pregnant women and their changing bodies, so our therapists will adjust their techniques accordingly. Carrying a baby inside you changes your center of gravity and puts a lot of stress on your back, neck, abdominal muscles, and shoulders. Pregnancy also relaxes your ligaments, meaning your pelvic joints are less stable, and it also changes your posture, pulling your pelvis forward. Add to that the extra weight you're carrying and you may end up with an aching lower back. A pregnancy massage typically lasts an hour. and we use specially designed pillows called bolsters to position a woman comfortably on her side. This helps especially during the later stages of pregnancy. Lying on your side is often the most comfortable position.

-improves mood and lower stress levels
-Reduces prenatal depression and anxiety
-Lower the risk of preterm birth and low birth weight in infants of women with prenatal depression
-Reduces swelling in the legs (after foot massage)
-Relaxes your state of mind to help you cope with all the big changes that are going on in your life
-Creates a calmer environment for baby and reduces fetal distress

Cupping Massage

Coastal Med Spa offers extreme diverse practices for optimal healing and restoration. Cupping is a type of alternative therapy that originated in China. It involves placing cups on the skin to create suction. The suction may facilitate healing with blood flow. We believe that cupping helps balance yin and yang, or the negative and positive, within the body. Restoring balance between these two extremes is thought to help with the body’s resistance to pathogens as well as its ability to increase blood flow and reduce pain. Cupping increases blood circulation to the area where the cups are placed. Our licensed therapist, your medical condition or health goals and your preferences will help determine what method is used. During a cupping treatment, a cup is placed on the skin and then heated or suctioned onto the skin. The cup is often heated with fire using alcohol, herbs, or paper that’s placed directly into the cup. The fire source is removed, and the heated cup is placed with the open side directly on your skin. When the hot cup is placed on your skin, the air inside the cup cools and creates a vacuum that draws the skin and muscle upward into the cup. Your skin may turn red as the blood vessels respond to the change in pressure. Mild bruising or other marks, which usually occur with this technique, go away within 10 days of the session. Cupping is sometimes performed along with acupuncture treatments. For best results, you may also want to fast or eat only light meals for two to three hours before your cupping session. If your unsure of whether this massage type is the best option for you, please contact us for a consult prior to scheduling an appointment. The benefits are exceptional and the process is pain-free.

Dynamic Stretching Massage

This massage is BY FAR one of our most popular massages and also one of the most beneficial. Coastal Med Spa always promotes and encourages stretching for best health practices. Think of a house cat or dog, you always see them stretching when they awake from a nap or settle in for a nap. This is natures way of taking care of the body natural. We all know how little we tend to actually stretch, especially when we wake up or before we go to sleep. Stretching is vital to good health and body survival. During a Dynamic Stretch Massage, emphasis is placed on active movements where joints and muscles go through a full range of motion. They can be used to help warm up your body before exercising. Dynamic stretches can be functional and mimic the movement of the activity or sport you’re about to perform. For example, a swimmer may circle their arms before getting into the water. Dynamic stretches can also be a series of movements to get the body moving before any type of exercise. Some examples that the therapist will include will be trunk twists, assisted lunges, leg swings with the therapist being the wall.

-Cleanses body of harmful toxins
-Aids in warm-up and cool-down after a long day of physical or non-physical activity
